How to Split a PDF & Complete Guide
Browser-Based UtilityWhat Is a PDF Splitter?
A PDF splitter separates an existing multi-page PDF document into smaller, independent PDF files. Whether you need to extract a single signed page, break a textbook into individual chapters at custom split boundaries, or burst an invoice batch into one-page files, this utility processes the document directly in your browser.
How to Split a PDF
- Select or drag and drop a PDF into the upload card above (or load one of the built-in sample PDFs).
- Choose a split method: Split at Boundaries, Extract Selected Pages, Split Every Page, or Custom Ranges / Groups.
- Configure your pages: Click the βοΈ scissors buttons between thumbnails, check specific pages, or enter page ranges.
- Review the output groups displayed in the summary pills.
- Click Split PDF Now to generate and verify every output PDF.
- Download individual PDFs or a single ZIP archive containing all generated files.
Split PDF by Page Range vs. Extract Specific Pages
In Extract Selected Pages mode, entering 1, 4, 8-10 combines those five selected pages into one new PDF (and optionally exports the unselected pages as a separate remaining-pages PDF). In Custom Ranges mode, entering 1-3, 4-7, 8-12 generates three separate PDF files corresponding to each range.
Split PDF into Individual Pages & Large Files
Choosing Split Every Page exports each page of an N-page PDF as its own zero-padded file (report_page_001.pdf, report_page_002.pdf, etc.). Dividing large PDF reports into smaller chapter orfixed-size chunks makes them much easier to organize, archive, and share.
Does Splitting a PDF Reduce Its Quality?
No page-to-image rasterization is used to split your PDF. Pages are copied directly as vector PDF objects into new document containers, preserving original page dimensions, fonts, vector graphics, and embedded images. Note that document-level cryptographic digital signatures are invalidated when a signed PDF is modified, and certain cross-page interactive structures (like document-wide outlines or complex XFA forms) may not carry over.
Is It Safe to Split a PDF Online & Mobile Support
Your PDF is processed locally in your browser's memory and is never uploaded to any external PDF-processing server. The interface is responsive across desktop, tablet, and mobile browsers on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS; practical file-size capacity depends on your device's available RAM.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
15 Answers1. What is a PDF splitter?οΌ
A PDF splitter is a utility that separates an existing PDF into smaller documents. Depending on the selected mode, you can extract specific pages into one PDF, divide a document at chosen scissors boundaries, split by custom ranges, or export one PDF per page.
2. Can I split a PDF for free?οΌ
Yes. This TextTool.in Split PDF utility runs directly in your browser without requiring a paid subscription, software installation, or user account registration.
3. Can I extract specific pages from a PDF?οΌ
Yes. Select "Extract Selected Pages", then click individual page cards in the preview grid or type a selection such as 2, 5, 8-10 to create a new PDF containing only those pages in ascending order.
4. Can I split a PDF into individual pages?οΌ
Yes. Choose "Split Every Page" to generate a separate 1-page PDF for every page in your source document. You can download each page individually or download all of them together in a single ZIP archive.
5. Can I split a PDF by custom page ranges?οΌ
Yes. Choose "Custom Ranges / Groups" and enter comma-separated ranges such as 1-3, 4-7, 8-12. Each range creates its own independent PDF document.
6. Can I choose exactly where a PDF splits?οΌ
Yes. In "Split at Boundaries" mode, click the βοΈ scissors button between any two consecutive pages (or enter boundary page numbers like 3, 7) to divide the document at those exact points.
7. Will splitting a PDF change its quality?οΌ
No. The tool copies PDF page objects directly into new PDF containers instead of turning pages into screenshots, preserving original dimensions and vector text. Advanced document-level features like digital signatures or cross-page scripts may not be preserved.
8. Can I split a scanned PDF?οΌ
Yes. Scanned PDFs contain embedded page images inside standard PDF page objects and can be split just like text PDFs. Splitting copies the pages directly and does not require OCR.
9. Is my PDF uploaded to a server?οΌ
No. Your PDF is read and processed locally inside your browser using client-side JavaScript. Document bytes are never sent to a remote PDF-processing server.
10. Does the tool work on Windows, Mac, Android, and iPhone?οΌ
Yes. It works in modern desktop and mobile browsers across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Processing very large documents on mobile devices depends on available device memory.
11. Can I download every split document together?οΌ
Yes. Click "Download All as ZIP" in the results panel to package all generated PDFs into a single `.zip` archive while keeping individual PDF download buttons available.
12. Can I split a password-protected PDF?οΌ
Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be opened without decryption and are flagged clearly during validation. Unlock or save an unencrypted copy of your PDF before splitting.
13. Can I merge the PDF files again afterward?οΌ
Yes. Because every generated output is a standards-compliant PDF document, you can combine them again at any time using the TextTool.in PDF Merger utility.
14. Does splitting permanently change the original PDF?οΌ
No. Your original file on disk is read-only and remains completely unchanged. All split outputs are created as new files in browser memory.
15. Is there a maximum PDF file size?οΌ
A default browser safety threshold of 100 MB (and 1,000 pages) is configured so large files do not exhaust tab memory. Actual capacity depends on your device's RAM and browser limits.
